A New York elsewhere, in Sicily

A former industrial space where bodies speak and dance questions its audience.

Inside the theatrical piazza Teatro Massimo, among stucco and balconies, there is a space that looks as if it came from another city. Perhaps New York, perhaps Antwerp.

We are in Catania. And what we have found is Scenario Pubblico — a national centre for the production of contemporary dance, home of the Zappalà Danza company, and a European reference point for choreographic work.

Behind a discreet façade is a spare, refined loft: black stage, clean light, bare walls. All of it made to leave room for movement, for the idea, for the meeting between artist and audience.

Dance here does not entertain: it questions, it holds you, it draws you in.

It is not only performance — it is a place that produces culture, with artists in residence, education projects and international exchanges. And contemporary dance, seen this close, is simply magnetic.
