All issuesAlessio Rubino, a Sicilian comedian born in 1998, has made something rare: sketches that feel as though they came out of a stage play, dressed up as pop comedy.
His dialogues between God and Lucifer are simple and irresistible. A tired and very Sicilian God — but a gentle one. A sarcastic and surprisingly tender Lucifer. The lines have the rhythm of someone who genuinely speaks the language of intelligent irony.
Lucifer has the soul of a cat, God that of a worn-out Sicilian father. And we laugh — a great deal. We badly need to.
He built all of it himself: follower after follower, sketch after sketch. There are people who perform, and people who — like him — bring intelligence, heart and a sharpness that catches you out. Real talent does not impose itself: it makes itself recognised.
If you have not yet seen Alessio Rubino’s God and Lucifer dialogues, you are missing one of the cleverest and funniest things going online. It is theatrical irony, it is pure Sicily, it is brilliant writing.
